Book Blast: Political Straight Talk by H. John Lyke

Inside the Book:

Title: Political Straight Talk
Author: H. John Lyke with Kathryn L. Robyn
Publisher: iUniverse
Genre: Political
Format: Ebook
In writing the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, our Founding Fathers established a democratic republic with a solid political basis. What they wrote was the political map that future representatives would need to follow to conduct the people's business in an efficient and effective manner. As long as they faithfully carried out the people's will, our democracy and republic would function in a way congruent with our forebears' wishes.

What in the world happened?

H. John Lyke, a board-certified psychologist and professor emeritus at Metropolitan State College of Denver, and the author of multiple political psychology books, suggests that ever since George Washington retired as captain of our ship of state, subsequent presidents and members of Congress have failed to use the sailing chart of the Constitution. Instead, they've chosen to pursue their own and their political parties' self-interests.

Lyke uses psychological principles to explore the reasons why our government has fallen so low, and in the voice of a kind but determined therapist, he offers simple and viable solutions to get us back to following our map.

Book Blast: Edward IV, England's Forgotten Warrior King by Dr. Anthony Corbet

Inside the Book:

Title: Edward IV, England's Forgotten Warrior King
Author: Dr. Anthony Corbet
Publisher: iUniverse
Genre: Historical
Format: Ebook
As the 100 Years War ground to its dismal end, England groaned under the misrule of Henry VI and his Lancastrian favorites. The House of York rose in rebellion; and Parliament restored York in the line of inheritance to the throne. Edward, Earl of March, triumphed at the Battle of Mortimer’s Cross; Parliament asked him to be King and the people proclaimed him Edward IV. His life and legacy are chronicled in Edward IV, England’s Forgotten Warrior King.

For ten years, Edward struggled against repeated Lancastrian rebellions. He was driven from his kingdom by Richard, Earl of Warwick, but then he won decisive victories at the Battles of Barnet and Tewkesbury in 1471. For another twelve years, he reigned wisely with peace and prosperity, as a beloved King; but then he died at age forty one and his twelve-year-old son was proclaimed Edward V. Richard, Duke of Gloucester, seized the throne and put young Edward and his brother in the Tower of London, from where they never emerged alive.

Richard III was a good King and wanted to be respected, but the people believed he had murdered the Princes in the Tower, and would not forgive him. Queen Elizabeth and Margaret Beaufort plotted with Henry Tudor, who invaded England in 1485. Henry Tudor then defeated and killed Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field. Henry Tudor (Henry VII) was crowned King and married Edward IV’s daughter Elizabeth; the resultant Tudor dynasty would rule England for another 118 years.

Book Blast: The Last "True" Roller Derby by Larry Smith

Inside the Book:

Title: The Last "True" Roller Derby
Author: Larry Smith
Publisher: iUniverse
Genre: Biography
Format: Ebook

Larry Smith got some strange looks as a boy when he told everyone he wanted to join the Roller Derby, but he'd go on to have the time of his life living out his dream.

As a member of the International Roller Derby League, he engaged in a style of play that gave the fans what they wanted: fights, hard skating, and great athletic ability combined with a fast-paced game.

As a member of Roller Derby, he and his teammates welcomed minorities in the 1960s when racial tension was at its peak. Whites and blacks skated together, roomed together, and stuck together like brothers and sisters.

Smith and his teammates sold out everywhere they played: Madison Square Garden, the Chicago Coliseum, San Francisco's Cow Palace, White Sox Park, the Montreal Forum, and hundreds of smaller venues.

While the quality of the game ultimately declined, Smith was there for its glory years, and he remembers it all as if it were yesterday. He looks back on his many adventures-some of them almost unbelievable-in The Last "True" Roller Derby.

Meet the Author:
Larry Smith became hooked on derby games at age twelve after watching Mickey Rooney's movie, Fireball. By mowing lawns and raking leaves, he earned enough money to buy a pair of clip-on skates, and went on to join Roller Derby School.
